Good Show Mate: Biden vs. Palin

I've just finished watching the vice-presidential candidates debate in St.Louis between veteran politician Senator Joe Biden and national newcomer Governor Sarah Palin. The questions pitched by PBS Gwen Ifil was handled beautifully by both VP hopefuls. The Delaware senator was well versed, pointed, and clear on issues of climate control, terrorism, and Iraq. The Alaskan head of state showed her competent understanding on tax reform, oil drilling and East African affairs. Because of the clarity of Biden and Palin the conversation was much more enjoyable and precise than their respective running mates of Barack Obama and John McCain.

Immediately after the debate I paused and asked a simple question; "Who won the debate?" Well, the answer to the question was fuzzy and unclear. That is, the American public knew that Senator Biden is a brilliant, well informed and flipped debater. We expected him to do well or better yet--be Joe Biden. However, the majority of the 50 million viewers watched to see the newcomer--Sarah Palin. Hearing so much about her inexperience, issues challenged, and elementary understanding of foreign affairs people turned on their televisions to see Palin fall on her face.

Well, Palin did not fall nor slip up on any major issue. She proved that her pedigree was not of a stupid blond, trailer trash, or a beauty pageant bimbo. Instead, she illustrated that she was a quick reader, fast learner, well versed and a straight shooter. That is, she may not know the issues as well as Biden; but, she was willing to go toe to toe with her opponent on philosophical and administrative affairs.

Tonight, the country got a treat from two great Americans and good vice presidential candidates. In many ways Biden and Palin showed more similarities than differences. They are both from humble beginnings, isolated states that are often ignored from national discussions, and where long shots to be added to the presidential tickets of their parties. Really, the only thing that I can say, "Biden, Palin--Good Show Mates!"

What? No Deal!

Unemployment is rising, banks are closing, families are becoming homeless, and credit is now becoming something of the past and the United States House of Representatives rejects the economic bail out plan. What in God's name is going on? Well, the same old blame game.

Nancy Pelosi--on the verge of getting the votes needed to endorse the plan could not hold back her hatred, and disrespect of President Bush. In a childish outburst at a press conference she blamed Bush for the Wall Street economic meltdown while bragging about the strength of the President Clinton administration in handling the economy. Well, even if it was true, and it was not, all the House Speaker had to do was to keep her mouth shut. Her statements did not add anything good to the discussion. In fact, it polarized potential supporters of the bill.

Pelosi's friend, Barney Frank arguing that Pelosi's statements where innocent and that Republicans who did not support the bail-out had thin skin and joked that he would personally stroke their ego to get the bill through the House. However, he forgot to say that 9 members of his Finance Committee--Democrats, voted against the bail-out.

Republicans blamed the Democrats in trying to push a socialist program down the throats of the American people. In addition, they stated that the American people did not want a bail-out. What is the truth?

The story is that both, the Republicans and Democrats, defeated the proposal promoted by President Bush. For instance, 2/3rd of the Republicans voted against the measure while 40% of the Democrats refuse to sign off on the draft. In other words 95 Democrats voted against it. Sadly, a number of House members refused to support anything that is promoted by the Bush White House. But, like it or not, Bush truly understand that there is a real problem--one that only the federal government can eradicate. For Bush to call for federal aid--he must surely see a problem because he hates government interaction in business affairs.

Because of Nancy "I can't shut up" Pelosi and the thin skinned "sissy" Republicans the American public is unsure of their economic future. The inactivity of the two parties is continuing the double-digit unemployment rate, the record foreclosure rate, gas lines in Atlanta and the rapid destruction of the American way of life. That is, did these people see or realized that the Dow Jones dipped 700 points today?

Our so called Representatives illustrated today that they are spineless, single minded, arrogant buffoons that care nothing for the common man and woman of America. Instead of working for the growth, strength and dignity of the good citizens of the nation they would rather point fingers and play the blaming game.

Most of my friends, associates and neighbors where shocked that nothing was done. Specifically, they responded like this: "What? No Deal! What idiots!

The Great Debate: A Sleeper

For weeks the country waited for the clash of the titans--smooth talking Barack Obama versus bull headed John McCain. Supporters of both politicians bragged and predicted that the opponent would be exposed as a lightweight thinker who could not possibly lead the nation. Thus, like millions of other Americans, I waited, changed my schedule to watch, listen and smile at the sparks that where supposed to fly. Instead, we got two career politicians who refused to go off script to speak to the hearts and souls of the American people. In fact, it was one of the worst presidential debates in recent memory.

The major issue that Americans needed to hear from the candidates was their stance on the current state of the economy. In the week of the Mississippi debate current president, George Bush, told us that our economy was on the verge of a collapse. He argued and pleaded with American public and Congress that we needed a federal bail out to starve off this man-made economic holocaust. The candidates, playing ugly and stupid politics, first came out with a joint statement--pushed by Senator Obama, on the crisis. Secondly, Senator McCain, stated that both presidential campaigns should suspend their activities to handle the crisis. The problem is that the crisis is not new. If both Senators Obama and McCain would have been at their post instead of running around the country telling lies and attempting to destroy each other's character the crisis may have been avoided before the Wall Street explosion. Thirdly, President Bush held a meeting with both candidates and major congressional leaders about the crisis in an attempt to reach an agreement. Both sides--Republicans and Democrats, screamed and argued like school kids pointing blame while Americans suffered. Fourthly, the two spoiled brats ultimately travel south of the Mason Dixon to hold the long awaited debate. But, what we got was a long boring sleeper.

Neither politician had the backbone to address the current state in a forceful direct manner that gave hope to the American people. That is, Obama did not sound like Franklin D. Roosevelt and McCain did represent the spirit of Ronald Reagan; both former presidents gave inspiration in clear direct prose to a suffering nation.

After the so-called debate media personalities from Fox, CNN, MSNBC, and others debated as to the winner and loser of the Obama-McCain conversation. Well, I don't know who won; but I certainly know who lost--the American people.

It's Your Fault--The Decline of the American Dollar

Yesterday as I was driving from Tampa to Orlando I happened to catch two very different talk shows on the radio. One was a liberal talk show and the other was a conservative talk show host. Both "mouths" agreed that we have a problem--the American economy and that someone was to blame. However, the sad issue is that instead of looking for solutions the two dirt bags blamed the opposing parties for the mess. For instance, the liberal arrogantly pointed the finger to President Bush, oil barons, and wealthy Americans. The conservative attacked President Bill Clinton, government control and narrow thinking social reformers. The point is, both parties are to blame for the destruction of our way of life.

What do you mean? Well, let's take an obese person. That man or woman who tips the scale at 450 pounds did not get there from eating a candy bar yesterday. But rather, they got to be overweight by eating candy bars, fried chicken, pigs feet, and drinking coke for several years. It was a gradual process of over indulgence and arrogance. Well, the same is with the economy. The eroding of our capital base started at least 30 years ago through the reign of Democrats and Republicans. But because we acted arrogant in that the American economy was invincible and that we are "the power" we allowed selfish, and illegal policies and activities to proceed unchecked or questioned. Now look at us.

We are on the verge of an economic depression that may make the 1929 stock market clash look like a Sunday walk through the park. Right now, every segment of America is in jeopardy. The nation is so close to a meltdown that it is not only scary but individually deflating. It is not the time to place the blame on political ideology; but rather, to find solutions to our problems. My two kids don't give a damn about what Bush or Clinton did or did not do--they simply want to known can Daddy provide for their needs. So while you debate the silly arguments concerning the experiences, looks, lies, philosophies of the presidential candidates reflect on what needs to take place to reverse the engines of depression.

I Love America--When the Economy is Good!

A couple of years ago illegal and legal immigrants marched the streets demanding that they have a right to stay in America--even if they broke the law. Signs read in Orlando, Miami, Chicago and New York, "Who are you calling illegal, Anglo?" "You stole America from my father!" and "I'll go back to Mexico, when you go back to Europe," and several other like slogans. Millions argued that they paid taxes, America was built on the backs of immigrants and that they love the United States of America.

Well, with the drop in construction, the purchase of homes and the overall bad state of the economy these "I love America" immigrants have made a fast dash back to their homes in Mexico, Brazil, Ghana, India and a host of other nations. It appears that they only love America when the economy is good. Thus, they love Uncle Sam when they can exploit his goodwill and generous attitude of giving to the "oppressed, downtrodden, and neglected."

According to the Census Bureau and the Brookings Institute less than a half million people immigrated to the United States last year. The number is down from 1.8 million of the previous year. In addition, of the 38 million immigrants counted last year almost 3 million packed their bags and headed back to the land of their birth. It seems that they found the strength, courage and the backbone to use their finely toned American skills to build the economy and governments of their homelands.

The real issue is that true Americans confront and challenge the issues that threatens to negate our way of life. We accept that the United States of America, for good or bad, is our homeland, government and destiny and that we will find ways to heal the wounds that are currently oozing with blood and puss. Real Americans are not running to our ancestral homelands in Europe and Africa--but rather are staying the course for change and opportunity.

Sadly, new age immigrants, the you owe me something America immigrant; don't have the strength and love for the existence and growth of our society and culture. Thus, after we fix the economic mess that is running through America like raw sewage; lets seriously overhaul our immigration policies. The one positive element of this economic collapse is that the United States will never again be the economic lottery for the world's population. Remember and I said it--"You only love America when the economy is good!"

The Nation's Broke!

The housing market is in shambles, unemployment is up, repossessions are at an all time high, foreclosures is now too common, the American currency is at an embarrassing low rate and Wall Street is melting like butter on a hot day. What does it mean? Simply, the nation is broke. So broke that we're borrowing money from communist China for our domestic and international needs.

The great United States is rapidly crumbling before our eyes. Less than forty years ago we were the envy of the world. We produced and manufactured everything that we needed. Our industrial might, due to the outstanding American worker, along with our working infrastructure and military strength created a society that everyone wanted to emulate. But, in that desire to be like America, outsiders along with foolish social-political leaders, argued that we must share our good fortune, give greater aid and support to the world, allow American goods to be produce by benign people in the third world. Well, what did it get us? Unemployment due to outsourcing; inferior products--see China; tainted food--viva Mexico; and debt--Americans can't purchase anything unless we use that satanic thing called credit.

What we need now are American leaders who's willing to put Americans first! We need a Congress, an Executive Officer who is not moved by every little negative statement that is made by foreign leaders. We need leaders who have the guts to make hard decisions and is dedicated in making the United States again, the greatest nation on earth. We need a leaders who will say the hell with the outside--that is, we'll dig where we want in the Gulf of Mexico or in any ocean on earth, build a wall along the southern border is we want, and pull our support from your nation if you don't like our policy. Yes--we need that! Don't say its a republican or democratic thing. It is an American problem that must be cured by Americans. There are so many great Americans of the past, male and female, Black, White, Yellow and Brown who cared and put America first. Individuals like Franklin Roosevelt, John Kennedy, Ronald Reagan and the first President Bush who did not give a pig's eye what the world said. They followed their passion and love for the American people to do the right thing. Citizens such as A. Philip Randolph, Mary Bethune, Charles Houston and Thurgood Marshall while they were active on the domestic and social front their policies always rested on what was good for the common American.

The point is--regardless of the political bent the majority of our American leaders of the past had they never punked America to the world. The common line that connected Adam Clayton Powell, Lyndon Johnson, and Richard Nixon is that they were clear that the interest of the American people will always be paramount in their policies.

Therefore, if we are going to get out of this economic mess and establish a real change in Washington we must elect real true blood common Americans who love this nation more than life itself. We must fire the parasites in Washington who have the nerve to call themselves congress people and senators. And, we must stop the worshipping of presidential candidates to ask real tough questions to both would be presidents. If we fail to do the things that I mentioned--be prepared to live in a third world country with citizens who are unemployed, uneducated and broke!

I Am Back

It's been three weeks since my last entry. In that time a number of activities has occurred. For instance, both political parties held historic and exciting conventions, sadly Hurricane Ike caused havoc throughout the Caribbean and significant areas in the United States, Mayor Kilpatrick of Detroit resigned to relocate to his new home--the state's prison system, Lehman Brothers filed for bankruptcy, and my beloved Ohio State got whipped by USC. But, one thing remained the same--race polarization.

The polarization that I am talking about concerns the presidential election. The Obama-McCain fight has rekindled American intellectual W.E.B. Du Bois argument, who stated over one hundred years ago that the "problem of the twentieth century would be the color line." Well, it is also the problem in the 21st century. It is clear, that except for a minority of American voters, citizens are supporting presidential candidates on issues of race and to some degree sex.

Yesterday, in Orlando Senator McCain spoke to a Puerto Rican group. The group--heavily Republican and supporter of Governor Palin, McCain's running mate, aggressively voiced their denouncement of Obama and the historic feat of having a female running mate. The point--is that they were and have found an acceptable excuse to vote for/against race. Puerto Rico, like all of the Caribbean were ports of entry for African slaves. Regardless, to what native residents on islands like Puerto Rico, Cuba, or the Dominican Republic may say to promote white or Spanish culture and supremacy--the majority of the people from the 17th century to the present are African-Caribbean or Afro-Latino peoples. However, these dark skinned are the most uneducated, economic strapped, and discriminated. The Whites on the islands are the ones who control and dominant the political, economic and social structure. Thus, if Puerto Ricans in Orlando followed the legacy, demographic, and the traditional cultural values of the island they would favor Obama over McCain's running mate.

On the other side you have African-Americans who are supporting Obama because he is an identifiable Black man. That is, he looks, talks, and lives an African-American life. Ignore the fact that his bloodline bypass "African-Americans" and that it holds White American and continental African blood--he is still seen as "the brother." Both groups, regardless of the reasons has forgotten or ignored the concept that we should choose a president on his/her intellectual prowess, experience, moral integrity, and strength to make concise and pointed decisions.

Yes--I took a hiatus but I returned to a divided nation--The United States. It's good to be back!

Kill Obama: Remember What Farrakhan Said in 1988?

Louis Farrakhan, head of the Nation of Islam stated in 1988 that if anyone harmed presidential candidate Jesse Jackson, "he would be the last one you kill." Well, that statement created a firestorm of controversy and racial hostility. Farrakhan's generic threat may have been the case of selling wolf tickets as oppose to a response to an attack against Rev. Jackson. However, those words in 1988 is very real in reference to Senator Barack Obama.

It was reported last night that a group of white supremest was arrested on suspicion of plotting to assassinate Barack Obama. The police found boxes of ammunition, high powered rifles, bullet proof vest, disguises and walkie-talkies. One of the men confessed to Denver police that his colleagues talked about killing Obama because "we can't have a nigger in the White House."

Well, responsible citizens are happy that these racist nuts were apprehended. The fear, however, is that there are more crazies out to do harm to the Senator. If this, God forbids, happens the United States will see a civil war that will make the Summer of 1919 and the race wars of the 1960s look like Sunday School picnics. Let us not make Minister Farrakhan words prophetic. Let's protect all of our candidates and leaders. We are a nation of laws and rights; not one of hate and violence.

Strong, Brave and Consistent: Edward Kennedy

Despite brain cancer and a weaking body the 76 year old democratic icon excited the delegates in Denver by urging them to unite behind Presidential Candidate, Barack Obama so that "[we] can rise to our best ideals." Senator Kennedy, the last of the great Kennedy brothers that transformed 20th century politics illustrated the flair, savy, and dignity that made the Kennedy's one of the most powerful families in the world.

The 20,000 audience realized that they had witnessed a special moment and perhaps the last great presentation of Senator Kennedy's colorful career. In fact, listening to the elder statesmen one could not help but reflect on his brothers, President John Kennedy and Senator Robert Kennedy who ran for the Party's nomination in 1968. That is, both brothers, like Edward, carried a special swagger of Americanism that illustrated their soulful belief that Americans will always secure and carry the torch of liberty that defines the special nature and destiny of the United States of America.

What we saw Monday night was the passing of the torch to another generation and group of leaders. John Kennedy, the first Catholic to be elected as America's president, now--through his brother Edward, has endorsed Barack Obama, who npossibly may become the nation's first African-American president. Perhaps, it is not an accident that many see Senator Obama as the second coming of John Kennedy and Michelle as the new Jackie. If so, we may be witnessing a progressive rebirth of optimism and growth.

On a final note, if you're a supporter of John McCain, don't worry. Kennedy's rival--Richard Nixon came back to win the presidency and to ursher in a new wave of economic prosperity, international strength, and American pride. This too--may be the case of John McCain. Nonetheless, the early evening of Monday belong to Edward Kennedy--a symbol of strength, bravery and consistency; a Kennedy.

Michelle Obama--What a Woman!

I've just finished watching Mrs. Michelle Obama, wife of Senator-Presidential Candidate Barack Obama deliver the greatest presentation of her life to the Democratic National Convention. The lecture, filled with passion and love of her family and nation detailed her early background as a child living on the south side of Chicago. She shared with the thousands in attendance and the millions watching worldwide the struggles and hard work of a two parent working class family who held a commitment to God and a devotion to their nation that they will prepare their children to have faith and believe that all things are possible.

Holding these virtues Mrs. Obama reminded the audience that her family, like Barack's family in Hawaii and Kansas, and millions of families that dot the American landscape are true patriots who labor everyday to achieve the dreams and promises of Americana. Thus, like President Kennedy's remark over forty years ago, she is answering the question, "What can you do for America?" That is, we--Americans--will continue to hold the torch that in the United States a poor south side Chicago girl can go to college and one day address a national audience to support her husband, who was raised by a single mother, quest to become the first African-American president in the United States.

In this light Michelle also stated that we must look pass race as her husband does. He sees people and issues. He understands the feelings and struggles of the common man. He realizes that while the nation is the most diverse country in the world--it's people is connected to the same thread--Americanism. That red, white and blue line represents a people who long to be free, a people who are the vanguards of the oppressed, and a people who are not afraid to challenge the unknown. We, Americans, are family people who love our nation, God, and traditions. Regardless if you're a Democrat or Republican, Michelle laid it out tonight. What a woman!

Josephine Baker: One Sexy Spy

Famed African-American exotic dancer and entertainer Josephine Baker was a spy for the French resistance during World War II. Baker who grew up in poverty in St.Louis, Missouri gained famed for her dancing, acting, and singer during the Harlem Renaissance and Roaring Twenties. Her criticism of American segregation and discrimination made her one of the first major Black entertainers to take an aggressive stance against Jim Crow laws. Not afraid of being considered too radical or losing performance opportunities she refused to perform before segregated audiences.

In 1921 Baker played in "Shuffle Along," Broadway's first Black musical. Although she was an outstanding actor she became famous for her sexual and exotic dance called the "Black Venus." The original diva had men fainting and women envious with her semi-nude dance that featured a peek-a-boo grass skirt that left little for the imagination.

During the mid 1920s she left the United States for Europe where she became an instant star. Touring England, France, Spain, and Germany Europeans could not get enough of her. In fact, one of Baker's rejected European lovers committed suicide at her feet to show his love for the ebony dark goddess. In the 1930s she took a step forward to become involve in the war effort.

Hating racism and bigotry she joined the French Resistance against Germany. She traveled in and out of the Nazi state carrying messages that were written in invisible ink on sheet music. German officers, contrary to the Nazi Aryan beauty standard, where so captured by her Black beauty and blinded by Baker's stardom they never suspected that she was a spy.

After the War she traveled and performed in North West Africa and toured various ares in the Mediterranean. In her travels she adopted children that ultimately totalled eleven kids. Later during this period she returned to the United States to perform. But, America was not ready for a bold, and sexy Black lady who was an outspoken critic on Uncle Sam's race policies. Nonetheless, she remained in the United States and joined the Civil Rights Movement in 1948. Having a strange love-hate affair with the United States she left for Europe once more.

Her later years was extremely hard. She had health problems, two heart attacks, and fell into poverty. Many times she had to wear disguises as she begged in the streets to support her family. In the late 1960s and early 1970s she made a brief comeback in the theater. At this time though, many in America did not value her greatness nor legacy. Black militants ridiculed her because she did not endorse the Black Power Movement. In 1975 in April the bronze diva made her transition to the next life. Buried in Paris, France over twenty thousand fans said goodbye to one of the greatest entertainers and heroes of the twentieth century.

Red China's Pre-teen Team Wins Gold

One thing that you can bank on are tricks, lies and cheating from a communist nation. In the midst of a new found global love for China we have somehow forgotten or ignored the fact that they have created an unfair and unbalanced trade agreement between the USA and their nation; stolen technology from the United States; aligned with terrorist states like North Korea and hostile world leaders like Hugo Chavez who has promised to destroy "the American empire;" and have issued domestic rules to discriminate against African-Americans and other Blacks from certain venues during the Games. The point is, you cannot trust a "red" nation even at the Olympics.

Last night China's female gymnast team earned the gold medal over the United States and Russia. The girls, and I mean girls, that took the championship where children. Looking at these 75 pound individuals one cannot possibly believe that they met the legal age requirement of 16 years of age to participate in the Olympics. Indeed, female gymnast are small--but, 16 plus ladies are shaped, well, like women regardless of race, nationality or color. These girls, regardless of what their Chinese passport and birth certificate stated, looked like elementary school children.

But, why would the Chinese use girls to compete for the gold? Well, young kids do not view or feel the pressure. The activity is fun, cool, and exciting. Older athletes are aware of the pressure and the meaning of winning and losing in such high level competition. But, as I mentioned earlier--you cannot trust Red China.

China view this years Games as their coming out party to global society. It is a chance to show off their history, traditions, and "superior" advancements socially, economically, educationally and in sport. The games to the Chinese is a war between themselves as the West, i.e., the United States. Thus, they must win at all level by any means necessary.

To historically understand my argument review the Berlin Games and Hitler and the various sport wars between the United States and the former Soviet Union throughout the 1960s and 1970s. However, the real sadness goes to the pre-teenagers that China exploited for Olympic gold. These kids will not understand until years later how they were made pawns in their government's arrogance and drive to be recognized as a modern and powerful nation.

Isaac Hayes: One Cool Brother

The word on the street is that Barack Obama is the coolest dude on the scene. However, the Gold Medal for cool goes to the one and only Isaac Hayes. The Black Moses represented a breed of cool that combined Black pride, strong manhood, pan-Africanism, and soulful rhythms. Brother Hayes signified and illustrated a major truth that being Black and bold was not a bad thing.

Black Moses made his transition a couple of days ago. He will be missed for his music, movies but more so for his stands on cultural pluralism. That is, it is okay to be both an American and a Black man. I remember several years ago when I met Brother Hayes in Accra, Ghana--West Africa he stated that as an African-American he offers a special light and hope to the African world. Regardless, how we arrived in the United States, said Hayes, God granted us a special place to lead Africa from the bowels of third world existence to the status of being a global power. In this light he encouraged African-Americans to make pilgrimages to Ghana in the same manner how American Jews travel and study in Israel.

Thanks Brother Hayes for your talent, joy and inspiration that you gave us.

China and The World: The Yanks are Coming

Every four years I gear up for The Olympics. I love to see the variety of games, the great athletes, and the nationalism that each player and team bring to the competition. But this year is different; I sense a special American swagger that has taken hold of our representatives.

It appears that Team America is carrying that special "thing" to show the world that while we are struggling with our economy, the War, and racial and age prejudice in our presidential election--don't dare think that we're a nation in decline. With current President Bush and Former President Bush along with former Secretary of State Henry Kissinger in attendance in China the world is on noticed that we're coming back with a vengeance.

The Games remind me of the Berlin Games that featured African-American Jesse Owens, the image of the USA, against Hitler's Nazi regime. At that time, we also was struggling with the economy, we were fearful or at least careful of a new German power, and lastly, we battled internally with issues of race and gender. Great Ohio State University sprinter Jesse Owens gave Americans the hope, aggression and swagger to conquer the evils that threatened to destroy our republic.

Well, the China Games features a reborn America that is being led by great American athletes. These men and women are showing like our outstanding military personnel that we are here to stay and no force, less than God, will destroy and change our wonderful culture. Again, watch out world--the Yanks are coming, the Yanks are back!

Run, John, Run

The movie "Forrest Gump" is one of the greatest and funniest films of all time. The character "Forrest" was a simple and soulful southerner who had an innocent and big heart. Having a youthful crush and later sexual fling with his bi-polar and drug addicted girlfriend, Jenny, he followed her advice to the letter when he was drafted by the military to serve in Vietnam. Jenny's statement to Forrest was simply, "Run, Forrest, Run." Hearing and reading about the recent events of former North Carolina Senator, John Edwards, I could not help but wonder did his mistress, Rielle Hunter, tell the politician that if he spots reporters from the "National Enquirer" to run. It might be the case.

On July 21st Senator Edward's arranged to meet Ms. Hunter and their love child in the Beverly Hilton Hotel. He took extra pains to use side doors, cargo elevators and a very low key status to meet with his second family. The "Enquirer" reported after several hours he attempted to leave his lady and child around 2:30 a.m. However, he met reporters and photographers as he attempted to depart from the hotel. In a mad dash he ran with reporters on his heels through fire escape stair cases, onto a cargo elevator, and lastly sprinted into a men's restroom while fighting with reporters to keep the door closed. The normally cool politician who sought the presidential nomination for the Democrats must have looked a sight.

Sadly, Edwards has joined the company of several of his colleagues who sold their careers for easy sex. They are Detroit mayor Kwame Kilpatrick; former New Jersey Governor James McGreevey; former New York Governor Eliot Spitzer, former U.S. President Bill Clinton; and former New York mayor Rudy Giuliani.

Run, John, Run--but this time to North Carolina and your family.

Terror is Alive and Well in the USA

It seems that many Americans has placed the evil acts of 9-11 on the shelf. Some of think that it was a conspiracy by our own government to kill over 3000 American and foreign nationals in New York City, Washington, D.C., and western Pennsylvania. Others argued that our aggression in Iraq and Afghanistan has isolated terrorist plots against the American homeland. And still a few maintain new laws and government agencies has reduced domestic terrorism. Regardless, of ones thoughts in the USA on this issue terrorism is alive and well.

Senator Joe Lieberman announced yesterday that six major terrorist threats had been discovered and thwarted. Some included American natives who had converted to Islam while others represented newer immigrants who had become naturalized American citizens. The plans ranged from attacking soft targets like churches and shopping malls to suicide assaults against American troops stationed overseas. The would be terrorist represented uneducated and educated, White, Latino and African-Americans, and rural and urban dweller. The point is, regardless what we do to educate people about the evils of terrorism domestic hatred towards our own government is here to stay.

But, we should not be surprised. In the past 20 years terrorist have worked hard to gain a foot hole in the United States. Groups like Hamas has influenced members of the Saudi monarch to support terrorist activities against the USA. In addition, many in the King's house has aligned with Latin American cartels in Columbia and Mexico to train Al-Queda in western thought and Spanish to help their merger into the United States. It has also been reported that these same individuals and groups pay cartels and international street syndicates like MS-13 $5,000 a head for coyote transport across the border. If this is not bad enough we have racist groups like the New Black Panther Party and Ku Klux Klan who has made overtures to Muslim terrorist as allies in their fight against Washington.

The sad part in this entire debate is that neither presidential candidates has taken the time and energy to discuss this vital issue at length. In fact, they have not even made a definitive statement of the two border agents who have been convicted and sentenced for the shooting of a drug runner and terrorist operative who attempted to cross the border illegally. Yes, terrorism is alive and well--ask Americans who live along the USA-Mexican border.

Obama's In The House--National Urban League

One day after Senator John McCain spoke at the National Urban League Convention in Orlando, Florida rival Senator Barack Obama came in on a caravan that would have put ancient Hannibal's elephant train crossing the Alps to shame. Lined with a motorcade that included local, state, and federal police, news reporters, and public historians the Obama train entered the Convention Center where he was met with an equally imposing mass setting of thousands of supporters 1/4 mile deep waiting to watch, listen and hail the Democratic presidential candidate.

The senator from Lincoln-land did not disappoint the audience. He attacked McCain on drilling for oil, education reform, the War, the environment and Paris-Obama racist political advertisement. However, he did surprise many when he duplicated some of the same stances as the GOP candidate. First, he maintained a conservative position on education, family, employment, and business development. Obama maintained that in each of these areas is the demand for personal accountability and responsibility. That is, one cannot expect the government to do everything--the people must do something themselves. He radically borrowed a page from republic conservative Booker T. Washington when he remarked, "why go to a restaurant when you can't afford the lunch?" And, "you can't worry about a neighborhood if you can't afford a house in that community." In essence, work hard, save, be thrifty and responsible.

Secondly, he co-signed McCain's thoughts on advancement in the military. The day before Senator McCain stated that equality within the military has demonstrated a better fit for non-whites than in the public sector. He mentioned the promotions and power position jobs that African-American hold in Uncle Sam's Army. The NUL audience soundly rejected the Senator's opinion. However, Obama stated that many Blacks hold important positions in the American military. He focused on the African-American three star general who is "really" overseeing "all" the operations in the Afghanistan War. The NUL leadership and its members became dead quiet when these words where spoken by the Senator.

Nonetheless, regardless of Obama's position and his gradual alignment to conservative principles he rocked the house. His style, Malcolm like speech, cool demeanor, and gracious confidents won over the crowd. It reminded me of Ronald Reagan. That is, it is not what he said that's important; but rather, how he said it. Out of all people--I even found myself tapping my feet to the Obama beat and train. At the end of the lecture I overheard someone saying "This is Obama's House." I don't know about that--but, I can say, that Saturday afternoon in Orlando belonged to Senator Barack Obama.

Urban League Treat McCain Rudely

A few days ago Senator John McCain spoke to the National Urban Leagues' convention in Orlando, Florida. The organization that dates back to 1910 when it was founded in New York City cites itself as a progressive movement that assist Blacks in making positive transitions to urban life. Under the leadership of great men like Whitney Young, Vernon Jordan and John Jacob the League surfaced as a hard hitting civil rights organization that practiced sound judgment, fiscal responsibility, and American virtues, honor, and moral respect throughout the 20th century. However, its trek into the 21st century under the leadership of former New Orleans mayor, Marc Morial, is an organization that lacks behavior decency and endorses crude and rude arrogance and hostility. Specifically, I am speaking of the John McCain talk last Friday.

Senator McCain, the Republican candidate will never be confused with presidential legend Ronald Reagan, who was called the "great communicator." However, he along with his delegation was worthy of respect that the Urban League did not grant. Of course, some readers would say--McCain has little respect for Black America. Regardless, the National Urban League from its beginnings focused on the promotion of Black sophistication and class. This upper lip manner has allowed a host of presidential candidates throughout the years to speak at forums like the NUL, the NAACP and the African Methodist Episcopal Church. Therefore, political ideology has never stopped us from being cordial. If so, Richard Nixon would never have spoken at any Black meetings.

First, the Executive Director--Marc Morial, did not recognize Florida's chief officer--Governor Charlie Crist and fellow Republican Micheal Steele, a Black and NUL member, who ran for the Governor's office in Virginia. But really, not to recognize the Governor of the State that is hosting your meeting is insulting and mean spirited.

Secondly, the questions that where fielded from the field in a town hall style was charged with accusations, attacks and insults. For example, a minister like character hollered, styled, and acted about the "green, yellow, white glass ceiling" that negates the rise of the Black intelligentsia and professional class. When the Senator attempted to answer the question, the polemic shouted that "you really don't understand" with an arrogant smirk. Another question came from a New Jersey female physician who voiced concern about the closing hospitals in her state and insurance problems that M.Ds face. Well, when McCain responded, she attempted to embarrass the Senator about his recent examination for skin cancer.

The issue is not about fair or hard questions. Indeed, difficult topics should be presented to individuals who are campaigning for the most important job in the world. But, it should be done with class. The Urban League is supposed to be, according to another questioner, the organization that houses the best minds in the Black world. But, on the day McCain spoke--brilliance did not show--but, rather hatred and arrogance.

Little Sammy: A Man of Strength

Sammy Davis, Jr., also known as Little Sammy and Pappa, helped to lay the foundation for racial diversity, racial political activism, and racial dignity in 20th century America. Born in Harlem, New York to an African-American father and Puerto Rican mother who both where entertainers, Sammy was taught the skills of hardwork, dedication, and love of craft and self. In a colorful career that spanned over fifty years he illustrated that he was one of America's greatest performers. However, he was also a great spokesperson of Black rights and Americanism.

In 1943 he was drafted into the United States Army. Being from Harlem, the cultural Black capital of the world, he was not accustomed to discrimination and blatant racism. A true New Yorker, he used his wit and fists to battle the bigotry that he met in Uncle Sam's Army. His smarts allowed him to neutralize race haters more than his boxing skills. In the military he wrote and acted in plays that made his military associates think about the negatives of Jim Crow America while being entertained with great singing, dancing and acting. When he left the military he continued in the entertainment business appearing on Broadway, in Hollywood, and night clubs throughout the nation. However, there was one role that stuck in his mind and encouraged him to achieve for himself, race and country. That was his star performance in "Rufus Jones for President (1933)." Sammy plays a little boy who fell asleep on his mother's (Ethel Waters) lap and dreams that he is elected president. In a strange way the role illustrates Sammy's view of America--that is, every and anything is possible.

Sammy's move towards that "anything" model and America's concept of cultural pluralism represented itself when he made the revolutionary move in the late 1950s to convert Judaism. In this period, even in cultural liberal Harlem, an African-American accepting the traditional brand of Judaism was unheard of. His conversion caused him to lose many fans, potential contracts and friends. In fact, one of the few people who stood with him and supported his decision was Frank Sinatra.

Davis, also believed in political activism and empowerment. In his career Sammy supported the work of Charles Hamilton Houston and Thurgood Marshall in the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People's legal argument against American apartheid. He also endorsed Congressman Adam Clayton Powell of New York; and the leadership of Coleman Young as the mayor of Detroit. However, one of his more visible stands was supporting the candidacy of John F. Kennedy for the presidency of the United States. He was excited with the young Kennedy and thrilled when he was elected. However, in his quest to show that America was ready to accept the Black man he was deeply hurt by the actions and racism of the newly elected president. Working so hard for Kennedy's election Davis naturally expected an invitation to the Presidential Inaugural Ball. But, the Kennedy's snubbed the Black entertainer by saying an invitation to Davis would be too controversial and it could negate white southern support to the new administration. Kennedy's actions deeply hurt Davis and it stayed with him until his death in 1990.

However, only a few knew how deeply Sammy was offended by President Kennedy. The actor-singer, always spoke highly of the Kennedy's and never spoke openly about the event. He continued singing and supporting Black causes. He supported the work of Martin Luther King by giving thousands of dollars to the movement while also explaining the right of self-determinism to white associates. He spoke proudly of Shirley Chisholm's run for the democrats presidential nomination and openly condemned South Africa's racial policies of apartheid by refusing to perform in the racist state. Other activities included his anti-war stance; but his support of American troops. He was one of very few anti-war entertainers who traveled to Vietnam to sing for American soldiers. In this light he also went to Canada to interview and entertain draft dodgers.

Sammy Davis, Jr., was indeed a man of strength. His quiet support of civil rights, American integrity, and humanitarian causes made Davis one of the greatest men toi have been born in the United States.

McCain Credits Bush For Drop In Oil Price

A few days ago Senator John McCain, GOP candidate for the Oval Office, credited the drop in oil price to President Bush's decision to allow offshore drilling. Keeping in tune with the campaign season and his chief rival, Senator Barack Obama, Democratic candidate, who opposes drilling on the Outer Continental Shelf, McCain argued that Obama wants us to stay depended on Middle Eastern oil. But, regardless of where McCain or Obama stand is on this issue the drop of oil prices is the result of Arab fear of American ingenuity, creativity, and anger of Arabic manipulation of oil.

The oil barons of the Middle East, West Africa and South America realized a few days ago that Americans have decided not to be pushed and manipulated any longer in reference to petroleum. The consumption of oil last month in the United States dropped to almost half of the previous month. American scientist and businessmen are answering the call of the public to quickly find new sources of energy and to cultivate and use the oil supplies that are located off our coast. In addition, our cultural dependency of oil is changing right before our eyes. For instance, we are driving less, and when we do drive we're obeying the speed limit; we're are gradually becoming a walking community again; bicycles are in fashion--it is common now to see men in suits and business ladies riding bikes to work; public transportation is being used more in places like Orlando, Tampa, and Denver; while automobile companies are discarding gas hogs for fuel efficient cars. In light of this our Arab friends have decided to throw us the bone of temporary cheaper gas. But it's too late.

One thing about Americans is that we don't crumble and crack under pressure. Our history has demonstrated that we'll ride out the storm while also producing the necessary items or laws that will ultimately protect our culture and way of life. Like Malcolm X stated, "the cream always rises to the top."

The United States, the greatest nation in the history of mankind, has decided to rekindle the independence, the drive, and the positive arrogance--"that we can do it better than anyone else," to once again lead the world toward productivity. On this tip the Revolution or Change that is being employed by Obama and McCain is really the thesis of the American people. That is, a Change back to independence, strength, and progressivism.

Pickens Is Talking the Right Talk

The United States is handcuffed by international oil companies and nations. Our citizens for the first time in history are choosing between buying gas or medicine, food, and shelter. It is time that we find a real solution to our energy problem.

T. Boone Pickens, the billionaire oil man from Texas has found a way to change our culture of dependency on international oil. He argues that we must begin to use other sources for energy. His thesis rest on the fact that the United States imports over 70% of its oil that comes to $300 million yearly. His strategy is that we tap into wind power. But, while we explore and develop this source we must continue to dig for more oil supplies, build nuclear energy plants, and explore and produce bio-fuels.

Mr. Pickens is a true patriot who's only objective is to make the United States independent again. He is a friend of both President George Bush and Speaker of the House of Representatives Nancy Pelosi. He is pleading with the leaders of both the Republicans and Democrats to stop the childish partisan fight and begin to solve the energy problem that is destroying our nation.

T. Boone Picken's has the right plan and the right talk. For greater clarification on his radically new plan visit www.pickensplan.com.

Michael Savage: Greedy Doctors and Autism

Last night, July 22, 2008, Michael Savage, conservative talk show host, created a firestorm when he said that 99 percent of autism cases are issues that deal with spoiled brats who have not been told to stop the act. He argued that many of these kids live in homes without fathers who could control these children and are basically running roughshod over mothers. Continuing, Savage concluded that greedy doctors and makers of medicine deliberately over diagnose children and adults as autistic to peddle drugs.

Many parents of autistic children along with several autistic organizations viewed Savage comments as being mean spirited, hateful, bigoted and over the top. But, Savage the ever ready entertainer and debater challenge anyone in his 82 million listening audience to debate him on the merits of his argument and to show that there is a definitive medical way to treat autistic people.

Savage is an old school hard line critic. He is rough, bullish and often cold blooded truthful. What he really was saying is that the medical community is often too quick to label children and adults as autistic. This rush to medicate has turned millions of Americans into zombies. Instead, of old fashioned natural aids like exercise, fresh foods, and strict discipline to these individuals we have fallen prey to the slogan, "more medicine is better."

The same issue is the case of children being labelled as ADD (Attention Deficit Disorder) and ADHD (Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder). In the last twenty years there has been a disproportionate number of elementary and high school boys being diagnosed with these illnesses. Female teachers overwhelmingly do not understand that boys and girls learn differently. Thus, while a girl may sit still and mannerly; boys are more apt to talk, move, touch things and generally play. But, it does not mean that they are not learning or that they cannot learn. They must be treated differently. That is, boys are not dysfunctional girls.

Unfortunately, female teachers along with simplistic doctors influence single mothers to medicate fully functional and normal boys. Again, Savage is only saying that too many Americans are falling victim to the medical cartel that is designed to make money from illnesses, real or imagined. We must get back to common sense and rational reality. That is, everything cannot be solved with a pill. Thus, while Savage statements rode the fence of insensitivity--his comments must be taken seriously.

Tom--Stop Begging

My morning ritual goes something like this--fixing breakfast and lunch for my six year old son, getting washed and dressed, and the two of us getting into the car en route to summer camp or school. In the car I turn on the radio to listen to the famed Tom Joyner Show, the fly jock formerly of Chicago. I enjoy the old school music that features the greats of Motown and the extreme liberal dialogue that is sprinkled with more conspiracy theories than fact. Nonetheless, it's a nice way to get the day started. However, last week Tom Joyner shocked me into seeing him and the show as a desperate group of 21st century slaves.

What happened? Well, it was announced that Belgium based beer brewer InBev had purchased Anheuser-Busch, Inc. for $52 billion dollars. The new company, Anheuser-Busch InBev has now become the largest beer brewers in the world. The news completely stunned Tom Joyner like most of us. Really, Busch beer is as American as baseball and apple pie. The sell was almost un-American. For the average American it was worst than the selling of the Chrysler Building to the Arab investment group Abu Dhabi for $800 million dollars.

But Tom's disappointment sounded hopeless, spineless, and slave like. The on air conversation sounded something like this. Sybil, one of the co-host on the show reports on the sell. Tom responded, "what about the amusement parks?" The cost cutting giant has already announced that they will sell the 11 amusement parks that are currently owned and operated by the Busch corporation. Tom, now really desperate frantically asked, "what about scholarships to Historically Black Colleges and Universities?" Sybil says, "I don't know about that." Tom continues, "perhaps we should call them and let them know about us." The point is that he is begging.

Leaders don't beg. Instead, they should have a B plan for such issues. There are other companies that value the legacy and tradition of Black higher education. Surely, one or more will pick up the slack. More so, Tom and his associates should talk about organizing of the millions of affluent African-Americans, and organizations to lay new financial measures to support Black students. Indeed, what is wrong with African-Americans supporting Black institutions and students? But, I know that it is very difficult for Tom and his friends to think independently while being financed or co-opted by such corporations like Walmart, Disney World and Anheuser-Busch. Come on Tom--stop begging and get a backbone.

Cynthia McKinney: The Weird One Seeks The Presidency

Former six term congressperson from Georgia, Cynthia McKinney, somehow convinced Green Party Delegates at their convention in Chicago to nominate her as their candidate for the General Election. In past years, the Green Party has supported career candidate Ralph Nader. But, McKinney to represent the party is just crazy or better yet weird.

Let's look at Cynthia McKinney's political activity in the last eight years. First, she attempted to get Congressional support to look into the murder of hip hop gangsta rap star Tupac Shakir. Her argument was that he was a popular and important figure. Well, sister-girl, A. Philip Randolph, Harry T. Moore, Paul Robeson and Claude Barnett are popular and important historical figures--not Tupac. Secondly, she attacked Congressional Police Officer Paul McKenna because he did not recognize her as being a member of Congress. What happened, is that she attempted to enter The Longworth House Office Building without her Congressional Lapel Badge in display. The officer asked her several times to stop when the former congressperson walked away after she bypassed the metal detectors. Ultimately, the officer had to grab her arm; she responded by attacking him with closed fist. Later she apologized for her actions--but, did not take responsibility for the affair. Rather, she passed it off as part of elaborate Bush-Jewish conspiracy to destroy her. Thirdly, in the days after the terrorist attack on New York--the 9/11 affair. She wrote a letter to Saudi Prince Alwaleed asking him to give her the $10 million dollar check that New York Mayor Rudy Giuliani refused for the reconstruction of the Big Apple. The letter begged the supporter of terrorist prince for the bag of gold to help poor Black Americans in their quest to be free and equal. Well, all McKinney had to do, if she was sincere, ask a few of the multi-millionaire Black rap stars that she likes to forgo a few pieces of their bling, cars, and lavish trips to donate $10 million dollars that she requested. But, instead she reduced her role as a congressional leader to a dog sniffing for pieces of discarded garbage. In addition, it must be noted that the Prince later gave $100 million to the terrorist group Hamas for activities in Israel, England and the United States. The fourth point--is that she aligned with some of the most racist and anti-American domestic groups one could find. For instance, Malik Zulu Shabazz, head of the New Black Panther Party, became an informal adviser to the Georgian politician. Plus, members of the Nation of Islam campaigned for her while granting her protection. Indeed, Cynthia know how pick friends and associates.

Cynthia McKinney is a wild and loose canon. Her politics is based on confrontation, hostility and arrogance. Her principles are divisive that does not align with the Green Party's doctrine on Peace, Universal Health Care, Election Reform, Corporate Globalization, Alternative Energy, Election Reform and decent living wages for Americans. It is very difficult to understand how the Green Party can go from Nader to McKinney. That is one weird move.

Tony Snow: One Class Act

Today we buried a great American. A man who inspired, informed and held an unbending swagger on core issues of God, nation, morality, and conservatism. The person I am writing about is Tony Snow who fought a great fight against colon cancer; but ultimately lost to that unmerciful killer.

I met Tony Snow a few years ago when he hosted a conservative talk show on Fox. He informed me that he had read my book, "Inside the Nation of Islam," and that it was an important manuscript that should be brought to the attention of the American public. Shortly after our conversation his show booked me for an interview.

What I most remembered about the show was that Tony Snow was a cool, smart fellow who presented pointed and tough questions. That is, regardless of your political views, status or persona he saw his job as being a tough interviewer so that the television audience could get the most out of the topic and the guest.

For instance, before being named as the White House Press Secretary in April 2006, he gave the Bush administration pure hell. He critiqued, exposed contradictions, and constantly backed White House leaders into a corner where they were forced to explain their positions. He did the same with me, Malik Shabazz (Head of the New Black Panther Party), and Democrats. Friends and foe received the same treatment.

It is painful to see decent people make the ultimate transition in the prime of their life. But sometimes it is God's way of telling them and us that they have fought the good fight and heaven is pleased with their effort. Tony, you are a class act that will be missed. However, I am sure that you're lining up interviews with Jesus, Moses, and Muhammad. Until we meet again--my friend, stay the course.

McCain: You Gotta Admire His Toughness

Senator John McCain, Republican presidential candidate is one tough guy. I am not talking about his years as a POW in Vietnam, nor his diligence to run again for the GOP nomination after losing to George Bush four years ago or his resiliency to stay the course for this year's pick when he looked like a sure loser a few months ago. I am talking about facing the oldest, strongest and baddest civil rights organization in the nation, The National Association for the Advancement of Colored People.

Wednesday afternoon in Cincinnati, Senator McCain accepted the Association's challenge/invitation from Julian Bond to face the organization's loyalist at their national convention. The audience--a pro Obama crowd, heavily democrat, and haters of Bush and everything Republican was ready to pounce on the seemingly defenseless Senator McCain. But, in a move that silenced the most loyal Obama supporter McCain had the mass audience listening intensely to every word that uttered from his mouth. When not classroom listening they applauded, laughed, and occasionally stood up voicing their approval. But, what exactly did this old crafty political wizard say?

First, he disarmed the crowd by apologizing in not accepting the Association's invitation last year by broadly explaining the problems he had with his campaign at that time. Secondly, he praised Senator Obama as an "impressive" man who has "inspired a great many Americans, some of whom had wrongly believed that a political campaign could hold no purpose or meaning for them." Thirdly, he promised, if elected, to expand opportunities for African-Americans. Fourthly, spoke passionately about education reforms. And lastly, stated that Obama makes all Americans proud and that we rejoice in his success; but, jokingly added, that he'll "prefer his success not continue as long as he [Obama] hopes."

At this point, he laid out his differences from Senator Obama's plans for the nation. McCain said that there are fundamental disagreements on issues of the economy and the growth of the country. But again, in a brilliant move he stated to the partisan group, even if "I don't get your vote," he needs their "goodwill and counsel."

Many in audience left with a new found impression and respect for Senator McCain. Some stated, "he's open minded and people-oriented." Others remarked, that they will begin to pay more attention to the GOP candidate.

It is a sure bet that the NAACP will not endorse Senator McCain and that the majority of their members will vote for Senator Obama in the general election. But, you must take your hat off to John McCain. He walked into the lion's den and left with his head still attached to his neck. Say what you want--but, McCain is one tough dude.

Black Family Reunions: Its a Tradition

The cultural history of African-Americans has been damaged by negative images and views that define the Black story as a narrative of victim hood, dis functional families, and gang bangers. Contrary to what is told and promoted there are more positive and great stories of the sojourn of Black Americans than the retold illustrations of despair, sadness, and hopelessness. One of the great topics of victory is the development of Black Family Reunions.

Organized African-American Family Reunions can be traced back to June 19th, 1865 when Major General Gordan Granger of the Union announced in Galveston, Texas that slavery had ended. Granger's presentation came two and one-half years after President Abraham Lincoln issued his Emancipation Proclamation executive order that called for the end of the peculiar institution. The problem with the order is that the Confederate States of America did not recognize the decree since they had defined themselves as a separate nation and that the Union did not have the military power in Texas to enforce the 1863 order.

In 1865 things were completely different. One General Lee of the Confederate Army had surrendered in April of that year. Secondly, Granger arrived in Texas with a commanding force that could enforce the order.

In light of this--African-Americans saw themselves as truly freed people. Thus, in mass they left their prisons of plantation and servant life to test their new found freedom. But, what did early freedom mean to many of the newly freed former slaves? Simply, it meant family reunions.

By the thousands African-Americans traveled the South and the North looking for spouses, children and other kin that where separated by rules of the slave institution that defined them as property who could be sold and transported without any consciousness of human value and respect. When former slaves found relatives they celebrated, rejoiced and spiritually communed in a defined manner that illustrated a rebirth of the family and community.

Today, between the months of May and August African-Americas celebrate a true cultural experience that commemorates the end of slavery, the reconnection of family, and the rebirth and new birth of African and African-American traditional roots.

A few days ago I had the pleasure of witnessing my first family reunion. The experience was offered by a friend who's family (The David-Williams clan) spreads primarily through the states of Florida, Georgia and sprinkles in selected areas of Washington, D.C., New Jersey and New York.

In a three day span the family ate, danced and told stories about relatives, those who have died and others who are alive, in a festive manner that reinforced the special bond that they had. What I saw, was not just a gathering; but, a commitment to keep the bloodline and traditions alive.

The tradition was not just an African-American affair; but one that is alive and well in Africa and the African diaspora. For instance, in my travels I saw similar type of activities in North and West Africa, England and France, the Caribbean and Central America, and South America.

The greatest element of what I saw and experienced was the reinforcement of the positive. That is, the love of God, family and nation and quest to achieve personal and spiritual success. Plus, it was a delightful and special respect for the family and the leaders that it had produced. I am happy and glad for the continued growth of African-American Family Reunions. Therefore, do not be surprised if I show up at your Reunion. Don't ask--who I am? Just pass the potato salad and call me cuz.

Rev. Jackson: Did You Forget About 1984?

In 1984 Rev. Jesse Jackson, Sr., head of PUSH (People United To Save Humanity) and disciple of the late Civil Rights leader, Martin Luther King, decided to run for the Democrats presidential nomination. The campaign was a magnificent show of race solidarity, class and ethnic unity. However, in a course of minutes in New York City Rev. Jackson's words destroyed a promising run for the White House. Speaking to a group of reporters off the record he referred to New York City as Hymie town. When asked about his comment, the good Reverend flatly denied making the statement. However, he was pushed to tell the truth by Black reporter Milton Coleman of the "Washington Post."

While he eventually apologized for the Hymie town Jewish slur--he openly stated that Jews had "conspired to destroy his candidacy." With this opening came Jackson's religious buddy Louis Farrakhan of the Nation of Islam who had traveled a year earlier with Jackson to Syria to secure the release of down air force pilot Lt. Robert Goodman. Minister Farrakhan, the ever ready fire brand, defended Jackson by warning Jews: "If you harm this brother [Jackson] it will be last one you harm." For Milton Coleman, he said, "one day soon we will punish you with death." Adding, this is what civilized nations do to traitors.

Although the Hymie town episode created media and public excitement it removed Jackson as a serious candidate for the presidency of the United States. Therefore, with this history one would think that the senior Jackson would have learned his lesson. But, sometimes old dogs are just too stubborn and stupid to comprehend lessons.

During a break in a television interview a couple of days ago Rev. Jackson made a ugly and hostile comment about Democrat hopeful Barrack Obama. First, he accused the candidate of speaking "down to Black people." Thinking that the microphone was turned off, he added: "The moral message [that Obama should speak on] must be a much broader message. What we need really is racial justice and urban policy and jobs and health care. There is a range of issues on the menu." Apparently, frustrated by Obama's position and presentation, Jackson concluded, "I want to cut his nuts out." Also, believing that Obama is out of touch with underclass Black urban culture Jackson childed Obama about speaking negatively about Black rap life to predominantly white audiences.

The problem is that Jackson, like many Black leaders like Louis Farrakhan, Eric Dyson, and Cornell West, worship and glorify negative hip hop culture and gangsta rap. On this issue, Obama calls for moral responsibility, conservative actions, and public decency.

To the credit of Jackson, however, he called the Senator's office and sent a letter of apology. At least, this time, he did not lie about what he said. On a sidebar to the controversy is Rev. Jackson's standing with his son, Congressman Jesse Jackson, Jr. The Congressman brutally and openly condemned his father's statement by saying: "[He] is my dad and I'll always love him. He should know how hard that I've worked for the last year and a half as a national co-chair of Barack Obama's presidential campaign. So, I thoroughly reject and repudiate his ugly rhetoric. The remarks like those uttered on Fox by Rev. Jackson do not advance the campaign's cause of building a more perfect Union."

It appears that there are cracks in the relationship between father and son. But, whatever the case among the Jackson family the senior spokesman comments illustrated a disregard of decency while promoting another line of unnecessary bigotry. Rev. Jackson--you did not remember 1984.

Slavery: The Sudan and Now, Haiti

In 1995 I went to The Sudan to investigate rumors and allegations of slavery. My journey to the African republic was stunning, sad, and harsh. I saw a Muslim state that respected Arab and Islamic culture more so than the value of human life. The Arab leadership attacked, massacred and enslaved survivors in the name of Islam and Allah. When my story, along with others, who decided to see modern slavery first hand, reported what we saw. American leadership voiced either indifference or disbelief. In fact, I remember a writer calling me a victim used by whites and Jews to attack Islam and Africa. Sadly, not one major leader at that time, President Bill Clinton, Congressman Charles Rangels, or Rev. Jesse Jackson, said a word about the destruction and slavery of Black life in The Sudan.

Today, 13 years later we have an eerily similar story in present day Haiti. In Haiti the first Black republic in the western hemisphere fought for the eradication of slavery and achieved a sense of self-determinism in 1804; the date of Haiti's independence. Now, after 200 years of freedom Haiti can sadly report that it is the home of over 300,000 child slaves. And, we can announce again in the United States, not one major political, social, or religious leader or organization has condemned Haiti's institution of slavery.

But, how is it that slavery exist in present day Haiti? It is very similar to the 24 million people who are enslaved globally. That is, in poor nations families often give their children away in hope for a better lifestyle for both the victim and their blood relatives. For instance, the majority of Haiti's slaves are children who originate from poor rural villages. Parents, literally, sell or give their children to "middle-class" families that live in the metropolitans of Port-au-Prince, Jacmel or Les Cayes. The idea is that these city people will educate and care for their new slave or restaveks, as they are called in Haiti.

These children who often start their service at the age of 3 years are mistreated, brutalized, and occasionally killed. They are common sights in the cities wearing ragged clothes, being feeble and malnourished while begging for food in the streets. Far too often--they are seen dying or dead on the streets from sever beatings or when abandoned by families.

But, can't the government stop the treatment? Yes, but in a strange way it's an evil tradition of the republic. The restaveks system has been around since 1804 while the current Haitian National Labor Code legalizes the practice as long as slaves are not younger than 12 years old.

Regardless, if it is legal or not it is a brutal system that must be destroyed. Children are treated worst than chattel. For example, they are beaten ed with cowhide whips, gang rapped, and murdered without remorse. Let's take the story of a boy named Rene. He testified that strikes from the whip lifted the skin and formed horrific blisters. Adding, that he was forced to knell on a bed of hot rocks while holding two large stones in each hand high above his head.

Naki, a 13 year old girl stated that her master constantly rapped her. He allowed his sons and friends to gang rape her. She said, crying, that they finished the job by rubbing hot peppers in her crotch.

Now, while the two major presidential candidates, Obama and McCain, campaign for the oval office it would be good to hear both say something of this issue. Really, if they can talk about human rights abuses in China, North Korea and Iran; they surely can say something about child slavery in the Caribbean. Well, if they don't--let's hear from the so called great voices of justice--Activist Al Sharpton, Rev. T.D. Jakes, Congresswoman Corrine Brown, Congressman Jesse Jackson, Former Attorney General of Ohio Kenneth Blackwell, Talk Show Host Tom Joyner, and Analyst Tavis Smilley to name a few.

If the above mentioned leaders can't speak on this topic--what about voices from the Haitian-American community? Perhaps, slavery in Haiti is like the peculiar institution in The Sudan. That is, both groups are poor, uneducated, their nations has little to offer the global community, and they are viewed as obsolete isolated people. The reality--Haiti is the new Sudan.

New Philadelphia, Ilinois: America's Town

This weekend we celebrate the birth of the greatest nation on earth. In spite of record gas prices, rampant foreclosures, and the increase in the unemployment rate--the United States has the greatest culture and society that world has ever known. One of the reasons is the American way of confronting tough times and creating new avenues towards success. One of the best examples is Free Frank McWorter and the town of New Philadelphia, Illinois.

Free Frank McWorter, the founder of New Philadelphia, was born a slave in South Carolina, later he was moved to Kentucky where his master allowed him to work outside the slave industry in saltpeter mines. In this extra employment McWorter saved over $800 which he used to purchase the freedom of his wife and later himself. In 1831 he left the slave state of Kentucky to move to Illinois where he purchased 80 acres and platted the land into 144 lots which he sold to White, Black, and Native Americans. The site ultimately became known as New Philadelphia, the first incorporated African-American town in the United States.

New Philadelphia, the new city of brotherly love, became one of the most important communities in Illinois for over 50 years. The town's decline came in 1869 when the Hannibal & Naples Railroad bypassed New Philadelphia, pushing development to the village of Barry three miles to the west. However, the importance of the community rest with Free Frank McWorter.

Free Frank was a visionary. Despite the issues of slavery, race prejudice, and slave raiders; Free Frank forged an American dream. That is, a place that illustrated the potential growth and success of a pluralist society. In New Philadelphia--intermarriage was accepted; entrepreneurship was encouraged; and the American creed of hard work, protection of family, love of God and nation was expected.

Free Frank--a great American knew that scores of bigots did not like his work and town. But, he viewed these critics and beast as members of the unmoral minority. Thus, as we celebrate and reflect on our nation's birthday--let's have a historical check on the success of our past and on the work of Free Frank McWorter, the founder of America's Town. For additional information check out my work on New Philadelphia as the Director of the Archaeological Dig at the University of Illinois at Springfield; and Dr. Juliet Walker's book, "Free Frank."

Its High Noon--Bring Your Gun

I respect the United States Supreme Court as being an unbiased, neutral and the only truth teller among the federal branches of government. Historically the leadership on the Supreme Court has been pointed, precise and fair--regardless if they followed a constructionist view or not. But, last weeks ruling, June 26, 2008, endorsing the personal right to own guns in the nation's capital is sickening. Indeed, I understand the Second Amendment and the right to own and bear arms--but, in cities like Washington, D.C., Chicago, Los Angeles, Orlando, and Detroit to name a few, where our nation's youth are being murdered at an unprecedented rate we need to review our position and interpretation of the Amendment. It is apparent that the majority opinion did not look at the current social dynamics of gun control, murders, and 21st century concepts of community militias.

I have no problem with citizens owning hunting weapons. My issue is with the carta blanc of permitting people to own military type weapons, allowing people to conceal weapons, and even giving the right in some areas to openly carry weapons. What we are creating is a lawless state of cowboys.

Let's be a little more specific. I live in Orlando a city that is known for its beauty and Disney World activities. However, we are also known as America's most dangerous and meanest city. Everyday our police and media is reporting on two or three murders in the "city beautiful." One of the reasons is the unchecked control of guns. For instance, people are quick to flash their weapon at the smallest incident. I remember a few months ago my six year old son and I was driving on toll road 408 apparently, I did not change lanes fast enough for another driver. Well, he drove next to me yelling while flashing his handgun.

Guns not only cause ordinary people to act like Clyde Burrows and Al "Scareface" Capone; but, it empowers gangs and other criminals. For instance, the largest gang in the United States is MS-13. This criminal organization of thugs are filled with illegal Latino murderers from various nations in Central and South America and the Spanish Caribbean. Right now they number 100,000 members and are growing and becoming more violent each day. They openly target African-Americans, police, judges, politicians and critics. Federal opinions that allow for open ended gun laws that are based on 18th century doctrine of the Second Amendment grants greater power to criminal elements like MS-13. Ok, my critics argue that guns protect true law abiding citizens against gang thugs and criminals. Well, let's examine that briefly. How often do you hear of a citizens turning away MS-13 street thugs, Mafia hit men, or members of the Bloods and Crips? Very seldom, when it happens it is reported on Fox, CNN, and MSNBC. Sadly, good citizens use handguns on other good citizens.

Lastly, the Supreme Court could have made a strong statement in favor of gun laws in Washington, D.C. Judges Scalia, Roberts, Kennedy, Thomas and Alito shame on you! Your ruling will continue the blood bath that is engulfing the youth of our nation. It's back to the time of Billy the Kid and High Noon at the town's square. Don't forget to bring your gun.

President Bush--You've Been Punked!

One of the great historical characteristics of Republican presidents is their tough stand on security, institutional protection, and American strength on issues of foreign affairs. For instance, past Republican presidents like Lincoln, Eisenhower, Nixon, Reagan, and the first President Bush was always very clear on their position in dealing with international friends and enemies. Regardless, of what we may have thought of their policies they issued an argument that we will protect our interest and we will not be influenced, persuaded, or punked into another government's political framework. However, our current--once great leader, has turned the United States into a second tier power in his most recent deal with North Korea, a country he once called a member of the "axis of evil" nations (Iraq, Iran, Cuba, and North Korea).

Throughout the President's tenure he has talked tough to Iraq; however, he has spoken like a pussycat to China, Russia, Iran, Venezuela and especially, to North Korea. For years despot leader Kim Jong-il has threatened the use of nuclear weapons against South Korea and Japan, ignored United Nation's orders to allow inspections of their nuclear plants, and has blackmailed the United States into giving food aid in exchange for their stoppage in the development of nuclear arms. It is clear that the North Koreans do not respect President Bush and the United States. Meaning--America is no more than a paper tiger that lacks influence and power.

Now, in the twilight hours of his presidency President Bush pushed Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice, the lone star in the White House, to make a deal with the Koreans. The overt agreement is for Kim Jong-il to destroy one of the towers at their nuclear station in Yongbyon, North Korea in exchange for the Bush administration to remove North Korea from sanctions of the Trading With the Enemy Act, which dates back to World War I, that now leaves only Cuba on the list.

What does this mean? North Korea is now eligible for loans and grants from the World Bank with American support, international shipment of fuel and food to the terrorist state, and possibly the release of frozen assets in the United States. President Bush gleamed that it was a great agreement and North Korea is now becoming a responsible nation.

The leadership of North Korea has never acted in a responsible and just manner to its own citizens and the outside world. They have used threats and lies to manipulate the world community to get what they want. Sadly, this is another case.

President Bush failed to tell the American people that we--the United States--paid millions of dollars for the demolition of the plant and that we have already started the process in sending food and educational aid to North Korea. Well, it seems that if the bellicose and arrogant leadership of North Korea can spend time, energy and money in the development of weapons of mass destruction they can also find the funds needed to feed and educate their own people.

President Bush's deal is just another act that will historically cloud his presidency as being ineffective. He has allowed a backward, hostile, oppressive, and little nation to dictate policy to the United States. President Bush--you've been punked!

Fight of the Century: Obama (Ali) vs. (Rocky) McCain

The 20th century was a wonderful era for boxing. It featured great champions and fighters like Jack Johnson, Max Baer, Joe Louis, Max Schmeling and wonderful fights like Sugar Ray Robinson vs. Jake LaMotta, Ali vs. Frazier, and Roberto Duran vs. Sugar Ray Leonard. Now, while the 21st century has failed to produced such great fighters and rivalries it has nonetheless given us two very interesting political pugilist--John "Rocky" McCain and Barack "Ali" Obama.

These two presidential candidates remind me of two very different boxers who disagree on every topic. They are like All-American Joe Louis vs. Nazi Max Schmeling, Panamanian Hands of Stone Duran vs. Silky Smooth Sugar Ray Leonard, and Smokin Joe Frazier vs. Fast Talking Muhammad Ali. They are opposite in every category. One is Black--the other is White; one's young--the other is old; one's tall--the other is short; one is good looking--the other, is not so good looking; and most importantly, one is running a traditional campaign while the other has developed an unconventional political machine.

Now, let's briefly introduced the two combatants. In this corner we have John McCain, a career politician who has tremendous influence on Capital Hill. He has introduced scores of bills and voted on hundreds that have become law. He is well respected among his peers and feared by his enemies. He is a loyal friend and associate. He is a fierce supporter for a strong military; but weak on immigration. His major flaw is that he sometimes forget detailed information, geography and sounds too much like President Bush. But, he is a solid performer and he can deliver a knockout punch.

In the opposite corner we have a national newcomer. A smooth talking Barack "Ali" Obama. While he new to the national scene he is a favorite showpiece in Illinois. In the state assembly he made friends with republican and democratic leaders in rural downstate Illinois. He made a reputation of being fair, honest, and efficient. He is also loyal to the party machine; however, he has given signs that he will challenge the Democratic traditional views on various topics. His major fault is that he sounds too much like Bad Girl Hillary Clinton. Plus, he's very weak on immigration, little experience on Capital Hill and on international issues. In addition, his association with "radical" clergymen keeps him as a target for his enemies. It also does not help when Hillary Clinton questioned his "political manhood." But, his sometimes weird political jerks and Chicago styled political movements throws off non-windy city conventional opponents. Many of his defeated adversaries are still asking, "who is this man named Obama?" Confusing his opponents with a grassroots political style is his major weapon. In boxing it's called, "taking or destroying your opponents will to fight."

The fight. You have a traditional politician who will throw conventional hooks and crosses that will challenge the opponents experience and will on issues of Iraq, Mideast politics, taxes, and free trade. Rocky McCain, if he finds an opening, he'll pressure Obama unmercifully looking for a knockout blow in the early to late rounds. He has a great corner, the Republican Machine, that is use to long hard fights. He does not mind taking a blow or two if it means getting one telling punch off on his own. His fight is to draw Obama into a series of town hall meetings. Exposing his soft belly of being a political rookie on national and international politics.

Obama "Ali" is indeed the crowd favorite. We can expect him to throw a series of fast blows and quick political moves to confuse the older and slower Rocky McCain. His organization is designed to blitz McCain in every state with a grassroots political machine that we have never seen in a presidential election. Obama "Ali" will hit him will constant jabs designed to force McCain onto the defense with his overwhelming support of President Bush. Obama is looking for a stoppage in the late rounds. His objective is to humble McCain and The Republican Machine.

The Outcome: It will be a tough fight that will cause both combatants to ask the question, "why did I ever get into this business?" Both corners will advise their fighters to hit below the belt, after the bell, and to destroy the character of their opponent. Yes, it will be an ugly and dirty fight. Expect race, age, and major dirty tricks to define this fight. Lastly, expect a decision once again from Florida, with Ohio being in the mix, to give us our next president.

2008 Oil Crisis: Its Our Fault

Every day it appears that the price of gas is rising. We're at a rate of $4.00 a gallon for regular gas--a price that if someone had said that Americans would be paying that much for gas 24 months ago that person would have been Baker Acted. But, we are here. The only ones who could possibly be happy over the gas price are executives of oil companies, major oil investors, and overweight people. CEOs and oil investors are obvious crews who benefit from the oil crisis. On the other hand obese individuals are being forced to walk and bike more and eat less. Indeed, they are not complaining. But seriously, we are in a deep oil crisis that will make the 1973 and 1979 oil crisis look like a walk in the park. But all of this is our fault!

We need to stop the blaming game of pointing to Presidents Bush or Clinton and the Republicans and Democrats for our oil problem. The crisis originated from our arrogance and bull headed attitude that caused us to remain slaves to Mideastern oil nations and other Organization of the Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC)after the 1970s oil crisis. What happened? What did we do? Nothing!

Unlike other western nations who enacted policies to wean themselves off of OPEC oil the United States, that is, our elected leaders--remained silent and stubborn believing that they could force oil rich states to sell us oil at a cheap rate. However, nations like France, Germany and Brazil had other ideals. Brazil, especially, borrowed an American concept of developing bio-fuels that had been created in the 1920s by American car manufacturers; but not used on a grand scale. Well, the Brazilian leadership decided to tell Brazilian Ford, General Motors and Chrysler in the 1980s to build cars that can run on alcohol that is made from sugar cane. The Brazilian military government sold the ideal to the public as an issue of national security and nationalism. Now, Brazil is totally free of Arab oil. In fact, the government subsidized private oil company, Petro-Bras, has become the seventh largest oil company in the world by primarily selling their oil to Norte Americano gringos.

Now, we had options if we did not want to produce bio-fuels. One, we could have built more refineries. But we did not. We have not built a new refinery in our country since 1976. That means, if there is a run on the finding of new oil fields we are not capable for the rapid production of refined fuel for the American public. Secondly, we refused to drill off of our coast. There are scores of oil rich sites off the coast of Alaska and Florida, both in the Atlantic and Gulf of Mexico, that we are not exploiting. However, our enemies and rivals are. For example, China, Russia and Cuba are drilling off the coast of Florida's Key West Islands. Brazil, which has found a mega oil source in the Atlantic are beginning to drill now in the Gulf of Mexico. What gives America?

Have we become so blind, stupid and crazy that we have lost our vision to live? Of course, it is chic for some Americans to brag about driving under the speed limit to save gas, walking and biking to work. But, this is the United States, the home of mega freeways, powerful and fast cars; not old China, the center of bike log jams. However, to keep from looking like the China of 1980, we must be bold and creative enough to tap into sources that we have now. I believe we can--I am not ready to give up my 300 horse powered Detroit made Pontiac. But most importantly--it is our fault. Let us find a solution.

One Nation, One Groove, One National Hymn

The past couple of weeks I have written about the current state of our nation in reference to politics, the economy, race, gender and the general attitude of the American people. I have concluded that we're a nation in transition. Sadly, the changing America is not one to be proud of. Our famed educational system, agricultural and industrial complexes, health care, highways and bridges, the American dollar and the strength of our reputation is in decline. Thus, in order to counter these changes and to reestablish American power and superiority we need a national hymn. That is, a common thought, feeling, a new sense of nationalism that can galvanize all sections of the American public. To understand the importance of a national hymn let us briefly look at two of America's greatest presidents--John F. Kennedy and Ronald Reagan.

At the end of World War II the United States was locked in a hostile ideological war with The Soviet Union. The two superpowers illustrated two polar opposites--democracy versus communism; freedom versus suppression; prosperity versus mediocrity; and the belief of a God versus atheism. The two powers literally divided the globe into two camps whereby the two powers fought proxy wars in South East Asia, Africa, and Latin America. In this mix of ideological warfare the Americans and the Soviets escalated the rhetoric in the creation of a Cold War.

The Cold War tested the American intellectual fortitude, social stamina, spiritual courage, and commitment to our way of life. In the 1940s and 1950s we, as Americans, where absolutely afraid of the Soviet Bear. We thought and believed that Communist spies and sympathizers had infiltrated our social, political and economic barriers. Many thought that it was just a matter of time that our way of life would fall to the Soviets. Former Kremlin leader Nikita Khrushchev, demonstrated our concerns when he stated in the United Nation assembly in 1956 while banging a shoe on a table and shouting to American delegates that "we [The Soviet Union] will bury you." By 1960 the United States needed a national hymn. The person to deliver that new song was John F. Kennedy.

John F. Kennedy won a hard fought presidential campaign against rival Richard M. Nixon, who later would become an American president. Kennedy, the young socialite; but, brilliant and energetic leader, took the oath of office on January 20, 1961 becoming the nation's first Roman Catholic president. In his first lecture to the American people he reflected on the needs and the strengths of our citizens. In this review he challenged us with a new hymn with the words, "ask not what your country can do for you--ask what you can do for your country." These simple words inspired us to overcome our fears, revisit the greatness of our nation, created a new sense of nationalism and to excel in all areas of pursuit to conquer and destroy all vestiges of Soviet control. President Kennedy's challenge inspired us to win the space race--landing the first man-made spacecraft on the moon, establishing the strongest military power on earth, and giving Americans a quality of life that was light years ahead of the lifestyle of citizens living in rival nations.

In 1981 another great American became president--former movie star Ronald Reagan. Reagan, the polemic and showman, became our new leader after four years of Jimmy Carter who was rocked by the Iranian student hostage incident. Iran embarrassed and crippled the United States as they allowed militant university students to storm the American embassy and take hostages. Carter, a dove on the military question did not know what to do in the face of having American citizens blindfolded and marched disgracefully on international television. However, Ronald Reagan did.

President Reagan believed in a strong military that must be utilized as a deterrent against terrorist organizations and hostile nations. However, he saw the the Soviet Union as a major force in the growth international terrorism and American enemies. Thus, his cause was to destroy the "evil empire." In 1987 in Germany President Reagan got the chance to openly challenge the Soviet's system and ideology that could possibly reduce the threat of future anti-American hostilities. In a wonderful and classic speech that sent excitement and chills through the veins of the most ardent Reagan critic, the President said: "General Secretary Milk ail Gorbachev, if you seek peace, if you seek prosperity for the Soviet Union and Eastern Europe, if you seek liberation: come here to this gate. Mr. Gorbachev open this gate. Mr. Gorbachev, tear down this wall."

President Reagan's comments gave new life, confidence and strength to Americans. The Reagan Revolution that it became known as, sparked a belief and a swagger that Americans are special and that they are driven by a special calling to lead the world to a better existence. Like Cotton Mather, who saw this new society [America] as a beacon, a city upon a hill; Reagan saw the United States as a divine country powered by God to protect and liberate states and nations from tyranny and oppression. Regardless, if you believed in Reagan's mission, he nonetheless, made Americans feel safe, proud and strong.

Today, we need a hymn, one like Kennedy's or Reagan's which can spark Americans to realize their great potential and their destiny as the leaders of the world. We need our next president--Obama, McCain, or Nader to understand that they must create a hymn that is loud, strong, and great that will unify our citizens. We need that president to excite and groove to a tune that will illustrate our love to the world; but also, our toughness to confront any enemy, domestic or foreign, that threatens our existence. We need a leader that illustrates our willingness to bargain while letting the world know that we're not afraid to stand alone. Lastly, we need a leader to show that we are not a shame to be called Americans, because that name stands for liberty, justice and equality. We need a national hymn!

Happy Fathers Day: My Daddy and All Dads

In 19 39 E. Franklin Frazier in his book, "The Negro Family in the United States," and years later in 1965 in Senator Daniel P. Moynihan's "Report" on the State of the Black Family both authors argued that the survival and strength of the African-American family rest with the leadership of the father and that the positive male image is missing in the nuclear family structure. Sadly, our society has fallen into the belief that Black fathers are missing in the protection, nurturing, and growth of their families. We have come to attack and stereotype fathers as sperm throwers, wife beaters, and children haters. However, there are millions of good African-American fathers in this nation. One of these fathers is my own daddy.

Like millions of people in the United States my father is an immigrant. He first entered America from Costa Rica as an illegal visitor. However, loving the dreams that he had for the nation he voluntarily left the United States returning to Limon, Costa Rica to apply legally to re-enter the USA. In his return he drove taxi es in New York, hustled clothing, attended City College in New York, while raising four children and caring for my mother. In addition to these pressures he had to deal with White racism and native African-American ignorance of Afro-Latino culture. That is, he looked like he was from any Black community in the United States; but, sounded like Ricardo on the famed "I Love Lucy" show. In spite of these hurdles he later attended three more colleges ultimately earning a doctorate degree in theology and building a chain of religious supply stores. But, in that period between entry into the United States and business success my father experienced the hazards of being a Black male in the United States.

What are these hazards? Being denied loans, housing, employment due to your race. Being stopped and harassed by bigoted police because of their misuse of law. Having ignorant Whites taking the liberty to refer to you as boy because they feel empowered to due so because of their race. Being referred to as an "uppity" or "full of it" because of one's community status or accomplishments. Or, having extra-legal racist groups like the Ku Klux Klan burn a cross on your front lawn and threatening to murder your entire family. These are just a fraction of the things my father faced as the leader of our home.

However, in spite of these activities he never illustrated a sense of hopelessness and victim hood. He found a way to survive and protect his family. In times of little money, we never went without shelter, clothing, or food. In times when my sisters and myself experienced blatant racism at school he demanded and got changes for African-American students. In a period that showcased African-Americans as clowns, and buffoons my father taught us about the great civilizations of the Egyptians, the Sudanese, and Maroon societies in America. In an era that reasoned that Blacks had no religious culture and history before Christianity and Islam my father taught us never to forget about African religious traditions that are practiced not only in Africa; but also, in Brazil, Costa Rica, Columbia, Haiti, Jamaica, and even in the United States.

My father, Dr. Vibert White, Sr., represented the best of manhood. However, he was not alone. There are millions like my father. I can only hope and pray that I am half the father to my children as my daddy and his peers are to their offspring. This Sunday celebrate with your father or community daddy. Show them the love, respect, and honor that are deprived to them daily. Remind America--there are more good Black dads than bad ones. Again, happy Father's Day--Daddy and to all the real American fathers.
